Input sought for Durham-to-Roxboro Rail Trail

A new project aims to transform an 18-mile inactive rail corridor into a multi-use trail.

The Durham-to-Roxboro Rail Trail Plan, announced by the City of Durham, Durham County Government, the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Agency, the N.C. Department of Transportation and the East Coast Greenway Alliance, is an initiative to create a 26-mile trail network linking downtown Durham to Roxboro.

The project aims to connect parks, schools and neighborhoods while highlighting historical, cultural and environmental assets. Planners want the trail to be accessible for all ages and abilities.

A feasibility study will include an assessment of the corridor’s assets, a concept plan driven by public engagement and a comprehensive implementation strategy.

Two drop-in workshops will be held to gather public input. The workshops will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Durham County Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St., and Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Durham North Regional Library, 221 Milton Rd.

Attendees can learn about the project, contribute to a detailed trail map and talk with the planning team.

Residents can also share their input by completing an online survey available at.
