Fire department invests in safety with new breathing devices

The Durham Fire Department is equipping its firefighters with new self-contained breathing apparatus to enhance their safety during hazardous operations.

The $3.3 million investment will replace the department’s current inventory, which has reached the end of its 10-year lifespan.

The new devices will provide firefighters with 20 to 30 minutes of clean air, low-air and non-movement alarms, buddy breathing ports and enhanced fit and ergonomics. These features are crucial for ensuring firefighter safety in environments filled with smoke, toxic gases and other dangerous elements.

The funding for the new devices was allocated through the 2024-2025 Capital Improvement Program.
