If you ask people in Durham about the best journalists who cover the city, you’ll hear one name mentioned a lot: Sarah Krueger.
The veteran WRAL-TV reporter lives here, works here, and seems to know everyone in town. She has covered local government, courts, crime, weather and just about everything else.
I’m happy to announce that Sarah is joining The 9th Street Journal as our new managing editor. She brings a deep understanding of the city and the characters that make it so fascinating to cover.
Sarah replaces Alison Jones, who retired in May after serving as managing editor for four years. Alison was a tremendous mentor to our student journalists and a sharp editor.
Sarah has covered a wide range of stories for WRAL-TV, from snowstorms to ICE, from dangerous roads to the controversy over SpotSpotter. She was one of WRAL’s Durham reporters from 2016 until 2022, when she became an investigative reporter.
She’s known in town for her tenacity, particularly for investigative stories.
“Whenever she calls, I get nervous – because I know how thorough she is,” said Mayor Leonardo Williams.
Sarah has deep roots at Duke. Her father Bob Krueger got his master’s degree here, became a professor of English and served as dean of the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. Sarah earned her undergraduate degree here in Spanish and International Studies as well as a master of arts in Liberal Studies.
She has won three Emmy awards, a Regional Edward R. Murrow award, and the AP Freedom Award for public records reporting. Last year, the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas named her Investigative Reporter of the Year.
As our managing editor, Sarah will lead all aspects of our coverage. She will help students develop story ideas, help them with their reporting and edit their stories. I also expect she will be an excellent mentor for students who are interested in journalism.
She will start in late August.
