Carolina Theatre replaces seats after 30 years

After 30 years, the Carolina Theatre of Durham is replacing seats in Fletcher Hall.

Construction began on the project in June and is expected to be completed within the next week. In a press release, the Carolina Theatre acknowledged that surveys from customers often commented on the (aging) seats.

The theater says the new seats are modern and comfortable while retaining the historic look and feel of the theater, which opened in 1926.

One big upgrade: cupholders. The theater said audiences had long groused about the lack of cupholders.

In addition to the new seats, three rows of seats in the lower section of Balcony One have been replaced with 27 Grand Suites. Each suite will have a small table with two seats, a snack, bottles of water and other beverages.

The floor of the auditorium has also been resurfaced, and the front-of-house audio and lighting capabilities have been enhanced.

Some of the first patrons to use the new seats will be those attending the 29th annual OUTSOUTH Queer Film Festival from Aug. 8-15.
