Durham City Council has appointed W. Bowman “Bo” Ferguson as the next city manager. Ferguson, now a deputy city manager, will assume the new role on Jan. 1, following the retirement of Wanda Page.
Ferguson joined the city government in 2013 as a deputy city manager overseeing nine departments and 1,600 employees. In 2021, Page created the Public Safety portfolio and made Ferguson its leader, overseeing police, fire, emergency communications and community safety.
He oversaw the creation of Durham’s HEART program, which provides responders to certain nonviolent 911 calls.
Before joining Durham, Ferguson served as city manager in Hendersonville from 2008 to 2013 and assistant town manager in Black Mountain from 2005 to 2008. He previously held leadership roles in Rockville and Greenbelt, Maryland.
He holds a master’s degree from the University of Kansas and a bachelor’s degree from Furman University.
Ferguson will earn a salary of $297,000.
