The city of Durham will receive $12 million in federal money to pay for pedestrian safety upgrades on the city’s busiest bus route along Holloway Street, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced.
The grant will support new curb ramps at 33 intersections, new flashing beacons at two mid-block crossings and upgrades to all 32 bus stops for shelters, lighting, benches and bike racks.
The project is under design, with construction expected to begin in 2026.
Between 2017 and 2021, 46 pedestrian crashes were recorded in the project area, three of which were fatal and four with serious injuries, the department said.
The project will improve safety and expand access to GoDurham’s Route 3/3B/3C, which has the city’s highest ridership, with 3,291 weekday riders. The project area represents 18.8% of total system ridership.
