City, county announce MLK holiday schedules

Most city and county offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency city facilities and operations, will close to the public from Monday, Jan. 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. 

Several services will remain open or operate on modified schedules. Here’s what’s open and closed:

Open:

  • Downtown parking will be free for on-street parking, in some city-owned garages, and in city-owned surface lots.
  • GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS will provide Sunday-level service.
  • Durham County Sheriff’s Office patrol division
  • The Water Management Department’s after-hours emergency number, 919-560-4344, which will dispatch on-call crews for water main break and sewer overflows.
  • County roadside recycling will not change.

Closed:

  • City offices, including City Hall
  • Most Durham County offices
  • Durham County Solid Waste and Recycling Convenience sites
  • All Durham County Library locations
  • Durham County Department of Public Health
  • Durham County Department of Social Services
  • Durham County Sheriff’s Administration and Records Division
  • Durham County Cooperative Extension
  • Solid Waste Management Department
  • All waste collection services are delayed by one business day.
  • The city’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility and the Household Hazardous Waste Center
  • The City Council meeting is delayed one business day, to Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. at City Hall.
  • Durham Parks and Recreation administrative offices and facilities
  • Durham One Call
  • Park Durham Customer Service Center

The city and county governments will host a joint program honoring King on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 305 E. Main St.
