The joint city-county planning department has launched a new program to recognize historically significant communities in Durham.
The “Heritage Communities” program aims to honor these areas and their contributions to Durham’s history.
Eligible communities must not currently hold a local or National Register district designation. The program is open to areas that demonstrate a shared historical identity dating back at least 50 years, as shown by written documents or oral testimonies.
Heritage communities should showcase cultural, social, political, economic or architectural significance within Durham’s history. They must have current or past ties to identifiable locations with defined boundaries.
Each one will receive a resolution of recognition from the city council or board of county commissioners, historical signage installed in a central location, a dedicated webpage linked on the city’s website and an archival file in Durham County Library’s North Carolina Collection.
The city encourages applications before the Dec. 31 deadline. More information is available on the city’s website.
