Transportation Department seeks input on Durham Freeway future

The city’s transportation department is asking for feedback on potential changes to the Durham Freeway corridor through Central Durham.

Durham Freeway, also known as NC-147, connects I-885 to I-85 through downtown Durham. The freeway was built in the 1970s and divided historically Black neighborhoods including Hayti and Brookstown.

The city began a study called Reimagine Durham Freeway in January to develop a community-led vision for the corridor. The study aims to acknowledge and evaluate the impacts of the Durham Freeway, reimagine the future of the corridor and reconnect communities in the city. The study is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025.

During the first phase of public engagement for the study, which took place from April to June 2024, the city collected 790 surveys from community members that were used to develop options for the freeway. A handout summarizing community feedback is available online.

The city is now soliciting feedback about the potential strategies it has developed for the future of the freeway. A survey is available online until Dec. 13.

The study team will also host two meetings in November. An in-person meeting will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the W.D. Hill Recreation Center, 1308 Fayetteville St. Spanish translators and childcare will be provided.

A virtual meeting will take place on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Spanish translation will be provided.

Participants can register for either meeting online. More information about the study is available on the city’s website.
