City seeks performance artists for cemetery event

Durham is looking for performance artists for the grand opening of the Beechwood Cemetery Columbarium in May 2025.

The city is accepting applications for performance opportunities at the event, which will feature monologues and scenes highlighting the lives of individuals interred at the cemetery.

Artists or teams have until 3 p.m. on Dec. 2 to submit applications online. The selected artist or team will receive a budget of up to $5,000 to cover artist fees, insurance, materials, transportation and documentation.

The city encourages local researchers, writers and performers with experience in historical research and storytelling to apply. Those interested in learning more can visit the project website for more information and to register for a virtual meeting scheduled for Nov. 13.

The chosen artist or team will be responsible for conducting historical research and interviews to uncover the stories of people buried at Beechwood from 1924 to the present. The artists will then need to adapt the research into three monologues and one scene that encapsulate the achievements and experiences of the individuals honored.

The performances will be held at the public grand opening of the Beechwood Cemetery Columbarium and will be documented and made available online.

Priority will be given to residents of North Carolina, especially those from Durham who understand Beechwood Cemetery’s history. Applicants from diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
