County pulls plug on Bull City United anti-gun violence program

Durham County Government is discontinuing the Bull City United program, effective Nov. 1.

The decision comes after a review of the program’s impact and alignment with community needs, according to a news release from the county.

The program, based on the Cure Violence Model, was launched in November 2016 to address rising gun violence in Durham County.  Initially focused on two census tracts with seven staff members, the program expanded with city funding in 2021 to cover six census tracts and 25 staff members.

At the time of its discontinuation, Bull City United had 14 full-time employees and six contractors, with a budget of more than $2.57 million dollars.

The county’s Community Intervention and Support Services Department says it will explore other initiatives to address gun violence and promote community safety and well-being.
