First chapter of Walltown plan focuses on Northgate Mall redevelopment

The first chapter of the Walltown Small Area Plan is now available for residents to review and share feedback.

As previously reported by The 10th Street Journal, the plan will help guide and inform possible decisions by the City Council about development in Walltown, a historically Black neighborhood located north of Duke University’s East Campus. The goal of the plan is to include residents’ feedback on new development and improvements to publicly owned spaces.

The first chapter of the plan aims to help guide the redevelopment of the roughly 59-acre former Northgate Mall site. The chapter is broken up into six policy areas: 15-minute community design, affordable housing, affordable retail, community-centered spaces, transportation and connectivity and environmental sustainability.

The city plans to host two community feedback sessions for the chapter. A Zoom virtual meeting, beginning with a brief presentation, will take place Sept. 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. On Sept. 7, an open house discussion will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Walltown Recreation Center, 1308 W Club Blvd.

An online survey is also available for feedback.
