The Durham County Office of Emergency Services has added five new ambulances to its fleet.
The new ambulances, Braun Liberty Type I modules on Ford F550 Super Cabs, contain custom-designed 13-foot compartments, according to a release from the county.
Durham County received the vehicles in late June. They have been striped and lettered with Durham County EMS identifiers. Radios and computer mounts will be installed, and the ambulances will be stocked and inspected by the N.C. Office of Emergency Medical Services before they hit the road.
Selection began in May 2021, when five ambulance dealers displayed 16 different ambulances for the county in an ambulance “rodeo.” Staff chose the Braun Liberty model from Spartan Fire, and specifications were tweaked to meet Durham’s specific needs.
“This was the first time in years that the folks who ride on the ambulances played a major role in selecting the ambulance and designing the workspace,” said Mark Lockhart, director of the Office of Emergency Services.
The Board of County Commissioners approved funding for the new ambulances in February. The total cost for the five vehicles was $1.3 million.
