Workshop offers help in clearing up criminal records

Legal Aid of North Carolina and the Durham Expunction and Restoration program, known as DEAR, will host workshops at the Durham County Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St., on Oct. 18 and Nov. 15 to help residents navigate the process of having dismissed charges removed from their criminal records.

DEAR, a collaboration between the City of Durham, the Durham County District Attorney’s Office, the Durham Public Defender’s Office, the Durham court system and community organizations, has dismissed $2.7 million in old traffic tickets and filed over 1,700 petitions for expungement, according to the city.

The workshops aim to help residents learn how to look up their criminal records, how to find the required forms for expunction of dismissed charges and how to fill out those forms. The organizers say expunction can help residents secure housing, employment and other services.

Both workshops will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m., and registration is required in advance.
