UNC Health and Duke Health join forces for children’s hospital

UNC Health and Duke Health have announced a partnership to establish North Carolina’s first freestanding children’s hospital.

The new facility, named NC Children’s, will be a private, tax-exempt organization governed by a 501(c)(3) structure.

The partnership aims to provide a higher volume of specialized pediatric care within the state, allowing families to remain in North Carolina for treatment of children’s complex medical needs.

The comprehensive children’s health campus, planned for a yet-to-be-identified site in the Triangle, will feature a 500-bed hospital, a children’s outpatient care center and a children’s behavioral health center. A robust research and education enterprise, backed by both universities’ medical schools, will also be integral to the campus.

This collaboration has been a decade-long goal for both institutions and was supported  by a $320 million investment from the state of North Carolina in early 2024.

NC Children’s is expected to open its doors in the early 2030s, with other core services, including the children’s behavioral health hospital, ambulatory surgical center and medical office building, potentially opening sooner.

The hospital will be affiliated with both the Duke and UNC schools of medicine, serving as a teaching hospital for both institutions.
