City Council approves $2 million for dam maintenance

Durham City Council has approved a $2 million contract to ensure the safety and proper maintenance of its five dams.

The five-year contract, awarded to Schnabel Engineering South, P.C., will include annual safety inspections, updates to emergency action plans and the development and upkeep of operation and maintenance manuals for each dam.

The dams, classified by their size and potential risk to downstream areas, include: Brown Water Treatment Plant Terminal Reservoir, Lake Michie Dam, Little River Reservoir, Mist Lake Dam and Williams Water Treatment Plant Terminal Reservoir.

Two of the dams, Lake Michie Dam and Little River Dam, create the city’s two water supply reservoirs.
