Mayor launches Veganuary challenge

A new initiative from Mayor Leonardo Williams is challenging Durham residents to try a plant-based diet for the month of January.

The Bull City Mayor’s Veganuary Challenge aims to highlight the environmental and health benefits of veganism and encourage community members to explore plant-based eating. The challenge is supported by Durham Public Schools, Downtown Durham Inc., the Durham Public Schools Foundation and other community partners.

Durham Public Schools will commemorate the challenge with a Student Art Competition focused on plant-based eating, with entries displayed in local businesses throughout the month.  Additionally, Northern High School’s Culinary Program will feature a Junior Vegan Chef Challenge, where students will create school lunch-compliant plant-based entrees. The Durham Public Schools Foundation has provided a grant to support both initiatives.

The challenge emphasizes the environmental impact of food choices, highlighting the significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, water use, land use and biodiversity loss associated with plant-based diets compared to meat-heavy diets.

More information about the Bull City Mayor’s Veganuary Challenge, including resources and participation details, is available on the challenge website.
