City to offer free Christmas tree disposal

Residents of Durham can dispose of their Christmas trees for free at several locations throughout the city during January and February.

The city’s Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, at 2115 E. Club Blvd., will accept live trees from Thursday, Jan. 2, through Saturday, Feb. 1. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Residents can also drop off trees at six park locations on Saturdays, Jan. 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 7 a.m. to noon. Solid Waste Management crews will be available to assist at these locations. The locations are:

  • C.M. Herndon Park, 511 Scott King Rd.
  • Valley Springs Park, 3805 Valley Springs Road
  • Rock Quarry Park, 701 Stadium Dr.
  • Southern Boundaries Park, 3400 Third Fork Rd.
  • Bethesda Park, 1814 Stage Rd.
  • Campus Hills (parking lot), 2000 S. Alston Ave.

Curbside collection for trees is available to current yard waste and exempt service customers from Thursday, Jan. 2, through Monday, Feb. 3. Customers should place their trees at the curb on their regular collection day. A tree collection will not count toward a free brush collection for yard waste customers.

All trees must be cut in half if taller than six feet and have all decorations and hardware removed, including tinsel, lights, garland, ornaments, nails and stands. Trees should not be placed inside bags.
