The Duke Lemur Center is celebrating the birth of a new baby sifaka, Arcadius, born on Oct. 16, to 13-year-old Coquerel’s sifaka Gisela.
Arcadius, named after the Roman emperor, is the sixth offspring for Gisela and her 15-year-old breeding partner, Rupert.
Gisela is the daughter of sifaka Jovian, who starred as Zoboomafoo on the eponymous TV show.
Arcadius was born weighing 101 grams, about the weight of a deck of playing cards. He has been described by keepers as a strong and vocal infant. Infant lemurs begin their lives in the “fanny pack stage,” clinging to their mother’s belly, before eventually transitioning to the mother’s back.
