Vivian Street could be renamed for former mayor

A downtown Durham street could soon be renamed in honor of former Mayor Bill Bell.

Vivian Street, which connects Blackwell Street and S. Mangum Street, is adjacent to the Durham Performing Arts Center.

Bell, who served as mayor of Durham from 2001 to 2017, was mayor when DPAC opened in 2008 and was greatly involved in its development, according to a document prepared by city staff.

Following a request to rename the street “William V Bell Way,” the Durham City Council will hold a public hearing at its next meeting to consider the change.

The meeting is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. Residents are invited to attend all City Council meetings in-person, at 101 City Hall Plaza, or virtually. Instructions about how to comment at the public hearing are available on the city’s website.
