New traffic beacon aims to improve pedestrian safety on Cameron Boulevard

A new traffic signal is now operational at the intersection of Cameron Boulevard and Frank Bassett Drive on the edge of Duke University’s West Campus, to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The signal, known as a pedestrian hybrid beacon, was recently activated by the city’s Sign and Signal Shop.

Pedestrian hybrid beacons are installed where traditional traffic signals are not deemed necessary but where authorities want to increase safety for pedestrian and bicycle crossings. These signals are unlit until activated by a pedestrian, and then flash through a sequence of flashing yellow-steady yellow-steady red to allow pedestrians to cross.

The Federal Highway Administration reports a positive impact on safety from these beacons, citing a decrease in crashes resulting in fatal or serious injuries in areas where they are in place.
