A quilt bearing the names of 1,054 homicide victims in Durham since the mid-1990s will be displayed this month at the Durham County Human Services Building, 414 E. Main St.
The Durham Homicide and Victims of Violent Death Memorial Quilt, created by artist Sidney Brodie, will be on exhibit in the second floor lobby from Dec. 2 through Dec. 30. The exhibit will be closed Dec. 24-26 for the winter holidays.
A kick-off event with Brodie will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in conference rooms A, B and C on the second floor of the building. The event is free and open to the public.
Brodie began working on the quilt in the mid-1990s after a Durham toddler was killed on the front porch of a neighbor’s home. The quilt includes a patch for each life lost to homicide in Durham.
A documentary titled “As in Death,” highlighting Brodie’s creation of the memorial quilt, was released in 2018 by PBS, in collaboration with UNC-TV and SCETV. It will be shown on various screens across Durham County throughout December.
