County to host hazardous waste collection event

Durham County residents can safely dispose of hazardous household waste at a collection event on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Northern Durham Convenience Site,  11894 N. Roxboro Road.

The event, hosted by the Solid Waste Division of Durham County General Services, aims to reduce the amount of toxic chemicals entering the environment.

A variety of items will be accepted, including aerosol cans, fire extinguishers, batteries, garden materials and fertilizers, mercury, pesticides, pool chlorine and acid, fuels, thermometers, paints and fluorescent bulbs.

Properly disposing of these items protects humans, wildlife and ecosystems from harmful toxins, according to the county.

The event will not accept commercially generated waste, explosives, ammunition, medical waste, radioactive materials or unknown or unlabeled materials.

Residents must present a current 2024-2025 solid waste decal issued by Durham County Government to participate in the event.
