Water service notifications to be mailed over next week

Some Durham Water customers will soon find out what kind of material their water service lines are made of, as the city is required to let people know if they have lead, galvanized or unknown pipes.

About 54,300 customers will receive a notification in the mail over the next week with information about their water service line. Letters are being sent in English and Spanish.

The notifications are informational and don’t require any action, other than for customers to read and learn about their water service line, Durham Water said in a news release.

No lead service lines had been identified in Durham as of Nov. 7. Customers who receive a notification will either have an “Unknown” notification or a “Galvanized Requiring Replacement” notification.

Customers with copper, brass, plastic, PVC, steel, or non-lead water service lines will not receive a notification letter.

Durham Water is compiling an inventory of all water service line materials in the city as part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revision. Durham Water submitted the initial inventory to North Carolina in October.

Durham Water encourages customers to identify their service line or sign up for a free service line inspection. Free inspections are limited and customers can be added to the inspection list by calling 984-242-3012 or emailing LeadSafeDurham@DurhamNC.gov.

Customers with crawlspaces who identify their service line may receive a $30 water bill credit. To date, 764 customers have submitted service line material for a water bill credit.

More information is available on the city’s website.
