The Durham Board of County Commissioners has unanimously voted to appoint Claudia Hager, currently interim county manager, to fill the position as the permanent county manager following the resignation of Kimberly Sowell.
Hager will be officially sworn in at the board’s next regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
Hager brings more than 29 years of experience, including 14 years with Durham County Government.
She also served as interim county manager from May 2021 to March 2022. Prior to her recent appointment, she served as deputy county manager overseeing financial affairs.
Prior to joining the county government, Hager served as the associate vice chancellor for finance and process improvement at North Carolina Central University and the associate vice president for finance at the University of North Carolina’s General Administration department.
In 2023, Hager was honored by Triangle Business Journal as a recipient of the Women in Business Award as a Leader in Finance. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Winston-Salem State University and a master’s degree from North Carolina State University.
