Federal and local officials gathered at the Southern School of Energy and Sustainability this week to celebrate funding that will bring 38 electric school buses to Durham Public Schools.
Michael S. Regan, administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, delivered remarks and participated in a ride-along on an electric bus. U.S. Rep. Valerie Foushee, Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams and other local and school officials were also at the event.
Funding for the new electric buses was announced in January. Durham Public Schools received a $15 million grant from the EPA through the 2023 Clean School Bus Program. To date, North Carolina has received $70 million dollars for 32 school districts to replace 230 school buses.
