Groundbreaking for new Lofts at Southside affordable housing project

Durham will celebrate the groundbreaking for 100 new affordable housing units on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 9 to 11 a.m.

The construction, part of the Lofts at Southside project, will provide housing for individuals or families who make 60% of the area median income. The project is funded by city funds, tax credits and American Rescue Plan Act funding.

The Lofts at Southside project is expected to be completed in April 2026. In total, it will contain 317 units with 238 affordable units. The entire redevelopment area consists of approximately 125 acres on the southern edge of downtown Durham.

The kickoff event will take place at 703 South Roxboro St. and feature guest speakers including Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams, Congresswoman Valerie P. Foushee and Durham County Board of Commissioners Chair Nida Allam, among others.
