Bike Durham partners with DPS for Walk and Roll events

More than a third of Durham’s elementary schools will participate in Walk and Roll to School events this month to promote sustainable travel and safe streets.

The nationwide observance begins today, Oct. 9. Bike Durham, an organization that advocates for safe and affordable transportation, is partnering with DPS to organize and promote events at individual schools throughout the month.

Several elementary schools are encouraging group walks or bike rides to school. These events typically begin between 7 a.m. and 7:15 a.m. to allow travel time to school. Four schools — Holt Elementary, Club Boulevard Elementary, Lakewood Elementary and Glenn Elementary — held their observances today.

The following events are scheduled for the remainder of the month:

  • Oct. 11: E.K. Powe Elementary, gathering at Oval Park
  • Oct. 11 Pearsontown Elementary, gathering at Solite Park
  • Oct. 16: Merrick-Moore Elementary, walking around the school
  • Oct. 18: Burton Elementary, walking around the school
  • Oct. 18: Fayetteville Street Elementary, walking around the school, followed by bicycle and pedestrian safety activities to celebrate students completing bicycle safety classes

Morehead Elementary and Hope Valley Elementary will also host events in October, with details yet to be announced.
