Durham mayor selected for early childhood education fellowship

Durham Mayor Leonardo Williams has been selected to participate in a national program for elected officials focused on early childhood education, the city announced in a news release.

The Hunt Institute’s Early Learning Nation Fellowship is an invitation-only program that brings together local elected officials, school board members and other stakeholders from across the country to share best practices and ideas for improving early childhood education.

The Hunt Institute, an affiliate of Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy, was founded by four-term North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt in 2001. The organization seeks to inspire and inform elected officials and policymakers about key issues in education, according to the news release.

“As a former educator and administrator, I am honored to join a cohort of leaders invested in improving education outcomes for our youth,” Williams said. “My participation in this program will better prepare me to address the needs of children in Durham and inform me on best practices in early childhood education.”
