The City of Durham and Durham County will host a series of events to celebrate Welcoming Week, a national campaign that aims to strengthen community bonds among all residents, with a special focus on immigrants and refugees.
Welcoming Week, an annual initiative led by national nonprofit Welcoming America, takes place this year from Sept. 13 to 22.
Durham will host an international soccer tournament on Saturday, Sept. 14 at C.M. Herndon Park, 511 Scott King Rd., from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Community members ages 18 and older will have the opportunity to compete. The event will also feature music, food trucks, children’s activities and information sharing. Registration is available online for both players and volunteers.
An Immigrant and Refugee Career and Resource Fair will follow on Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, 504 W Chapel Hill St. The fair aims to support refugees and immigrants in their career endeavors. Both the county commission and city council will issue proclamations recognizing Welcoming Week at their respective meetings on Sept. 9 and Sept. 16.
