County sees record tourism spending in 2023

Visitors to Durham County spent $1.125 billion in 2023, according to a study by Visit North Carolina.

Spending in 2023 marked a 10.5 percent increase from 2022, and surpassed the county’s previous record of $1.1 billion set in 2019.

In a separate study, Discover Durham, the city’s marketing and tourism development agency, found that 13 million visitors spent time in the county in 2023, according to an email from the agency.

Geolocation data showed that attractions on Duke University’s campus and the Streets at Southpoint led in visitor volume, the agency said.
