Durham County earns 11 national awards for innovation

Durham County has received 11 achievement awards from the National Association of Counties for its innovative approaches to local government.

The awards are the most ever received by the county, and this year marks the fourth consecutive year county staff have received multiple honors.

The National Association of Counties has issued achievement awards since 1970, recognizing outstanding county government programs and services.

During the association’s conference, which took place in July, Durham County was recognized for the following programs:

  • County Resiliency: Infrastructure, Energy, and Sustainability: Durham County stormwater and erosion control go online with GIS and web-based systems, which was also named ”best in category.”
  • Criminal Justice and Public Safety: Hayti Reborn Justice Movement program 
  • Health: Addressing maternal health disparities through the work of a woman’s health nurse navigator
  • Information Technology: Durham County Government IT procurement process 
  • Information Technology: Durham County Government Moveworks AI chatbot
  • Information Technology: Durham County Government, Department of Social Services quality control tool
  • Information Technology: Durham County, NC Environmental Health GIS dashboard

  • Libraries: Durham County Library’s Helping Hand: addressing homelessness and building community

The county also maintained its top-10 status in the association’s digital counties survey, ranking eighth among counties with a population between 250,000 and 499,999. The survey, conducted in collaboration with the Center for Digital Government, recognizes counties for their use of technology to improve government services.
