Law enforcement officers stopped 62 vehicles in the Interstate 85 corridor in a three-hour period on Friday, the Durham County Sheriff’s Office said.
The effort capped off a weeklong “Speeding Wrecks Lives” campaign by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Governor’s Highway Safety Program that sought to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding. The sheriff’s office said officers looked for drivers traveling at least 15 miles per hour over the posted limit.
The vehicles were stopped for the following charges:
- 41: Speeding
- 3: Failure to wear seatbelt
- 3: No operator’s license
- 2: Driving while license revoked
- 6: Expired registration
- 1: Operating a vehicle without insurance
- 11: Other violations
- 8: Verbal/written warnings
The sheriff’s office said the highest registered speed was 90 mph in a 60 mph zone.
