A 22-year-old Benson man was killed during a suspected car meetup in Research Triangle Park just after midnight on Sunday, according to the Durham County Sheriff’s Office.
Oscar Avila Santos was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Witnesses told deputies that they saw several vehicles speed away from the area about midnight after hearing a loud bang, but they were unable to provide any further information.
Deputies said they believe that a car meetup was held in the parking lot of the 4000 block of NC-54, and Santos was struck by a vehicle during the event.
Investigators are asking for public help identifying the vehicles that fled the scene.
