Discover Durham unveils guide celebrating Black history

Discover Durham, the city’s marketing and tourism development agency, has released a new African American Heritage Guide, a free resource for residents and visitors seeking to learn more about the history of Black people in Durham.

The guide is part of an effort to preserve and promote the contributions and stories of Black Durhamites.

Discover Durham worked with 2023 Piedmont poet laureate Dasan Ahanu to select stories and recruit local artists for the new guide. Through narrative storytelling, first-person accounts, poetry and art, the guide aims to represent Durham’s Black community and help visitors explore more of Durham.

Copies of the guide are available at the Visitor Info Center at 212 W. Main Street. A digital version is available online.
