County and city announce Juneteenth schedules

Most city and county offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency city facilities and operations, will close to the public on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. However, several services will remain open or operate on modified schedules.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday held on June 19 each year that commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.

Here’s what’s open and closed:

Open:

  • Durham Parks and Recreation facilities, including parks, outdoor pools, athletic fields and picnic shelters
  • Downtown parking will be free in on-street parking spaces, in some city-owned parking garages, and in city-owned surface lots
  • GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS (Sunday-level service)
  • Unincorporated Durham County roadside recycling will maintain the same schedule
  • Durham County Sheriff’s Office patrol division and Administration and Records Division (with limited staffing) 

Closed:

  • City offices, including City Hall
  • Most Durham County offices
  • All three Durham County solid waste and recycling convenience sites
  • All Durham County Library locations
  • Durham County Department of Public Health
  • Durham County Department of Social Services
  • Solid Waste Management Department
  • Curbside collections will be delayed by one business day
  • The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility and the Household Hazardous Waste Center
  • Durham Parks and Recreation administrative offices
  • Durham One Call
  • Durham County Cooperative Extension

Community members and visitors will be able to view the official Juneteenth Flag flying until June 19 at the Durham County Courthouse.
