Durham County Commissioner Brenda Howerton attended the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Board of Directors meeting in Hanover County two weeks ago.
The association meetings are meant to provide an opportunity for county leaders to share their priorities and work together on their top issues.
This year’s meetings focused on the evolving state behavioral health system, the child welfare system model and implementing trauma-informed approaches in the judicial system. Presenters included Health and Human Services Secretary Kody Kinsley, Raleigh Police Officer Hattie Gawande and New Hanover District Attorney Ben David.
Board members also toured The Healing Place of New Hanover County, a recovery housing facility providing programs for underserved adults with substance use disorders, and The Harrelson Center, a nonprofit organization collaborating with others to address community needs.
