Durham announces Memorial Day service schedule

Most city and county offices, including City Hall and all non-emergency city facilities and operations, will close to the public on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. However, several services will remain open or operate on modified schedules. 

Here’s what’s open and closed:


  • Durham Parks and Recreation facilities, including athletic fields and picnic shelters
  • City lakes (6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Edison Johnson, East End Parks, and Forest Hills Park spraygrounds
  • Downtown parking will be free in on-street parking spaces, in some city-owned parking garages, and in city-owned surface lots
  • GoDurham and GoDurham ACCESS (Sunday-level service)
  • Durham County roadside recycling will maintain the same schedule
  • Durham County Sheriff’s Office patrol division


  • City offices, including City Hall
  • Most Durham County offices
  • All three Durham County solid waste and recycling convenience sites
  • All Durham County Library locations
  • Durham County Department of Public Health
  • Durham County Department of Social Services
  • Solid Waste Management Department
  • Curbside collections will be delayed by one business day
  • The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center, Yard Waste Facility, and the Household Hazardous Waste Center
  • Durham Parks and Recreation administrative offices
  • Durham One Call
  • Sheriff’s Administration and Records departments
  • Durham County Cooperative Extension
  • Board of County Commissioners Regular Session moved to Tuesday, May 28

The Durham County Veteran Services Department invites all residents and visitors to attend its annual Memorial Day Remembrance Event on Monday at 9 a.m. on the front steps of the County Administration Building, 200 E. Main St. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.
