Purple Heart Month recognized in Durham County

Durham County’s Veteran Services Department will commemorate Purple Heart Month with events recognizing Purple Heart recipients living in the county.

A proclamation recognizing August as Purple Heart Month will be presented at the Durham County Board of Commissioners’ meeting on Aug. 12. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and will be held in the Commissioners’ Chambers, located on the second floor of the Administration I Building, 200 E. Main St.

The department will host a tea for Purple Heart veterans on Aug 22. The event will offer an opportunity for these veterans to connect and learn about benefits that may be available to them through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The tea will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Veteran Services Department office at the Human Services Building, 414 E. Main St.

According to Durham County, there are nine known Purple Heart recipients residing in the county. Anyone who knows of a Purple Heart recipient living in the area is encouraged to contact Durham County Veteran Services by phone at 919-560-8387 or email at veteranservices@dconc.gov.
