Community picks name for new health-focused specialty school

The county’s new specialty school has a name: the Durham Early College of Health Sciences.

The name was approved by the Durham Public Schools Board of Education after it won more than 400 votes out of 1,340 cast for a wide range of choices.

The 10th Street Journal previously reported about a survey seeking community input on the name for the new school, which will open in 2025.

The Durham Early College of Health Sciences, expanded from the current Middle College High School at Durham Tech, will offer students the opportunity to earn an associate degree in addition to a high school diploma with a focus on health sciences. Areas of concentration include nursing, allied health, surgical technology and clinical research.

Students will interact with Duke Health professionals throughout their experience and will have opportunities to move directly into jobs with Duke Health.
