At Wheels, a ‘bout’ of fun and friendship

At first glance, the jammers and blockers seem to be engaged in a ferocious combat. The players of the Carolina Roller Derby skate around the rink elbowing and shoving as they try to score points for their teams.

But look a little closer and you’ll notice this game — sometimes called a “bout” — is as much about fun as it is a physical workout. The players wear jerseys with playful nicknames such as Whackula, Rug Burn and Ash Whooping. And the skaters celebrate the tremendous diversity of the sport, which has grown from being a women’s sport to one that provides “an inclusive space for women and gender-expansive individuals through healthy athleticism, competition, and community.”

Staff writer Gabriella Rivadeneira spent time with the players to learn about Carolina Roller Derby and its community. Check out her story and photos here.
