County hosts vendor meet and greet for historically underutilized businesses

Representatives from more than 140 historically underutilized businesses and from more than 20 county departments met last week at a vendor meet and greet hosted by the county.

Businesses can obtain certification as historically underutilized from North Carolina’s Department of Administration if at least 51% of the business is owned by a minority, woman or disabled person.

The event, held during Black Business Month, was designed to provide a space for historically underutilized businesses to connect with department representatives and to promote collaboration and growth within the local minority- and women-owned business community, according to a release from the county.

Durham County has set a goal of spending a quarter of its budget with businesses certified as historically underutilized.

Minority- and women-owned businesses interested in obtaining certification are invited to apply for the Certify & Succeed program, a collaboration between the county’s economic development department and Infinity Bridges, a business consulting firm.
