A crowded field vies to lead the Bull City

After months of mudslinging, conflict and controversy in the Bull City, voters now get their say. The primary election for Durham mayor and three at-large City Council seats is coming up on Oct. 10. Meanwhile, some voters are already weighing in, with early voting underway now through Oct. 7.

The top two finishers in the mayoral race will square off in the Nov. 7 general election. In the crowded 12-way City Council race, the six top vote-getters will move on from the primary to the general election.

The first Saturday of early voting brought a steady stream of voters to the South Regional Library polling site.

To introduce the candidates to voters, The 9th Street Journal decided to try something different, together with our partners at IndyWeek.  Our student reporters took brief strolls through Durham with the candidates, asking about some of Durham’s key issues while we filmed the exchanges. Nearly all City Council candidates — 11 of 12 — took part.  The resulting brief videos offer a snapshot of those vying to lead the city, and we’re excited to share the results later this week.

Elections judge Cynthia Williams was on hand for early voting at South Regional Library Saturday.

Meanwhile, voting continues and campaign signs continue to sprout on local street corners, including a few unofficial messages. Our reporter Gabrielle Lazor describes the rogue signs in her recent report.
