A new app provides an extraordinary look at crime in Durham.
Crime and Place relies on years of local crime reports to predict where you’re most likely to be a victim of a robbery, burglary or auto theft. It also tells you the risk of rape and murder and will even give you alerts like this one:
9th Street Journal reporter Hank Tucker spent hours with the app over the last few weeks. He drove around town and discovered crime was labeled “high” in some surprising places, such as the American Tobacco Campus in the photo at the top of this article. He also spoke with some local professors who were troubled by the app’s methodology.
Read Hank’s full report here and take a drive through Durham to see what the app tells you on the Crime Compass.
