W.D. Hill Recreation Center to get solar power, backup energy

The W.D. Hill Recreation Center, located at 1308 Fayetteville St., is set to become the first public recreation facility in Durham to be equipped with solar power and backup energy storage.

The upgrade, partially funded by a $297,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation block grant, will enhance the center’s reliability as a shelter-in-place facility during emergencies and power outages, according to the city.

The W.D. Hill Recreation Center is located in a Justice40 community, a federal designation given to communities historically marginalized by underinvestment and disproportionately impacted by pollution. The federal government aims to provide at least 40% of the overall benefits from federal investments in climate and clean energy to these communities.
