Durham\u2019s <\/span>first<\/span><\/a> public historian hopes to honor the upcoming 100th anniversary of Armistice Day, the end of World War I, by ringing bells across the city. <\/span><\/p>\n Former Durham City Councilman Eddie Davis asked the Durham County Board of Commissioners to adopt a resolution to promote awareness for what he called Bells Across Durham County. The effort \u2014 also happening <\/span>around the world<\/span><\/a> \u2014 calls on houses of worship, civic organizations and other groups to ring bells Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to honor the armistice that ended the war. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cPeople from Durham did go to the war, people from Durham did sacrifice their lives during this war, so we ought to honor those people who were involved,\u201d Davis told the 9th Street Journal. <\/span><\/p>\n Davis said in a prepared statement at the meeting that the war\u2019s veterans should be honored because they fought to defend democracy. Davis said he expects the board to decide on the proposed resolution within the next month. <\/span><\/p>\n
