Sidney Brodie holds his iPhone to his mouth. \u201cWhat is 103 times 8 minus 1?,\u201d he asks.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201c823,\u201d Siri answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Brodie and helpers have sewn 823 cloth squares onto his\u00a0<\/span>Durham Homicide and Victims of Violent Death Memorial Quilt<\/span><\/a>. Each name, written in puffy paint, belongs to a person killed in Durham since 1994.<\/span> The Durham native and artist keeps track of the location of each name in a digital catalog. When asked for a number, he multiplies quilt columns by rows, subtracting any empty spots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhat is six times eight minus three?\u201d he asks. \u201c45,\u201d the phone replies.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Brodie pauses for a moment, sighs and locks his phone. So far this year he added 45 new names to the quilt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n On Saturday Brodie\u2019s quilt will appear at an unlikely place: the <\/span>Durham Holiday Parade<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
