Durham Public Schools is forming a team to raise awareness and provide support for food allergies among students.<\/span><\/p>\n
An estimated 2,400 students in the district are affected by food allergies, DPS said. The new initiative aims to assess the needs of students, staff and parents and develop strategies to provide support.<\/span><\/p>\n
According to DPS, one in 13 children nationwide are affected by food allergies, and 25% of those experience severe reactions while at school.<\/span><\/p>\n
The team will conduct a needs assessment to gather information and prioritize actions to address the challenges faced by students with the allergies. The district is seeking representation from various stakeholders, including nurses, administrators, teachers, staff and parents.<\/span><\/p>\n
The first meeting is scheduled for the end of January. Those interested in joining the team are encouraged to complete an <\/span>interest form<\/span><\/a> by Jan. 17.<\/span><\/p>\n
