The Durham Public Schools Board of Education has selected a new principal for Merrick-Moore Elementary School and a new district-level director of magnet and choice programs.<\/span><\/p>\n Deborah Brown is Merrick-Moore Elementary’s new principal. She comes from Hertford County Public Schools, where she was named the 2024-25 Principal of the Year. She has extensive experience in professional development, literacy, data-driven curriculum design, instructional coaching and technology.<\/span><\/p>\n Brown has been recognized with a 40 under 40 Educator award from North Carolina Central University and a teacher of the year award from NASA. She earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University and a master’s degree from N.C. State University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Kengie Bass is the district’s new director of magnet and choice programs. He will support magnet schools across the district while collaborating with principals on programming, marketing and evaluation.<\/span><\/p>\n Bass has 17 years of experience at the elementary, middle, high school and collegiate levels. He has previously been named a Teacher of the Year, N.C.
