{"id":10795,"date":"2023-09-08T16:39:04","date_gmt":"2023-09-08T16:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/?p=10795"},"modified":"2023-09-08T19:28:57","modified_gmt":"2023-09-08T19:28:57","slug":"is-new-campaign-sign-a-sneaky-attack-on-dedreana-freeman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/9thstreetjournal.org\/2023\/09\/08\/is-new-campaign-sign-a-sneaky-attack-on-dedreana-freeman\/","title":{"rendered":"Is new campaign sign a sneaky attack on DeDreana Freeman?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New campaign signs have popped up around the city promising that DeDreana Freeman will \u201cfight for Durham.\u201d But are the signs supportive or a sly dig at the mayoral candidate?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What at first seems to be a positive endorsement of Freeman\u2019s commitment to help Durhamites may actually be an allusion to an alleged brawl during the March 23 City Council work session. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">INDY Week <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/indyweek.com\/news\/durham\/durham-city-council-member-allegedly-punched-two-fellow-council-members-including-the-mayor-following-testy-work-session\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reported that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Freeman supposedly struck both Council member Leonardo Williams and Mayor Elaine O\u2019Neal in an attempt to get at Council member Mark-Anthony Middleton after the work session. WRAL, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/pastor-describes-what-happened-during-exchange-after-durham-city-council-work-session\/20783213\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">interviewed a witness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> who said Freeman did not attempt to strike Middleton, and that \u201cshe was just talking with her hands.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Freeman, the Ward 1 City Council representative, announced her candidacy for mayor on July 18. She said she hopes to \u201cengage in more dialogue and guide efforts towards \u2018working families\u2019 and populations of youth and seniors who don\u2019t get a fair shake.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her campaign signs have begun to puncture soil throughout the town with a simple message, \u201cDeDREANA FREEMAN FOR MAYOR.\u201d At least three have been spotted with an additional sign that says, \u201cSHE\u2019LL FIGHT FOR DURHAM.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The new signs are corrugated plastic and professionally produced. They invoke the same design as her regular ones by using seven stars in the upper right hand corner, but the shade of blue and fonts are both slightly different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We reached out to Freeman to find out if the signs were authorized and showed a positive attitude toward the whole \u201cfighting for Durham\u201d theme \u2013 or if she thought they were done by someone else as a sneaky way to remind people about the brawl. But, we did not hear back. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mike Woodard, another candidate for mayor, said he knows nothing about the additional signs, nor had anything to do with them. Chi Vo, a spokeswoman for Leo Williams, who also is running for mayor, said he was &#8220;unaware of these signs, their origins and their intentions.
